Subject: [Fwd: REGISTER YOUR STUDENTS! Special issue for International students] From: Laszlo Mihaly Date: Mon, 26 Jan 2009 18:04:58 -0500 To: "pagra-l@lists.sunysb.edu" The message from the Graduate School: 1./ For international students: the absolute latest time to register completely and correctly: February 6. 2./ For others: February 13. Please note that Pat occasionally looks at the registrations, and may help to correct errors, BUT ONLY IF THE DEADLINE HAVE NOT PASSED YET. Therefore it is in your best interest to register well before these deadlines. As Dean Lawrence Martin says: "Students who delay registration until the last moment and then experience difficulties will not get a sympathetic hearing." Best, Laszlo ------------------------ From Lawrence Martin, Dean of the Graduate School As in past semesters, I am writing to request your help to ensure that all new and continuing students are registered appropriately prior to SUNY's snapshot date (close of business, Friday 02/13/09). All supported students (TA's, GA's, RA's, fellows, tuition scholarship recipients) must be registered for full time study (for G1 and G3 students 12 credits, for G2 and G4 students nine credits, for G5 students nine credit of XXX 699, 700 or 701). We assume that G5 registration will be for nine credits of dissertation research; any other registrations require your prior approval as being relevant to the student's degree program. Please make sure that all international students are registered full time by February 6th. The Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) has planned a major system change that may result in system instability and outages. In order to insure Spring registration is entered in SEVIS for all of our international students, all international students must be registered full time by February 6. Your assistance will help us comply with Federal regulations while SEVIS changes are implemented. Any student who is not registered for full time study at snapshot will not be eligible to receive tuition scholarship support for the Spring semester and will also be in violation of their conditions of employment in any student title. Students, and programs, should be aware that not all transactions can be carried out using the SOLAR system and that it is their responsibility to register on time. Students who delay registration until the last moment and then experience difficulties will not get a sympathetic hearing. To assist with this process, Kent Marks recently sent to each graduate program: (1) a registration report which details the courses each currently enrolled student is registered for and (2) a list of students eligible to register who have not yet done so. Please lend your weight to your coordinator's efforts to ensure that all students are properly registered. The financial consequences for the campus of under-enrolling students are serious and the loss of tuition scholarships for students is a serious matter for them. Thanks for your cooperation with this important matter. LM. Lawrence B. Martin, Ph.D. Dean of the Graduate School; Associate Provost; Director, Turkana Basin Institute.
