Martin, Dean of the Graduate School SUBJECT: Call for Nominations for Turner Post-Doctoral Faculty Traineeships DATE: April 17, 2007 In our effort to enhance the diversity of instructors on campus, we plan to award three or four new Turner Post Doctoral Faculty Traineeships to begin Fall 2007. This program is designed to provide support for two years of teaching and research. Trainees will be selected from among recent graduates of doctoral programs at Stony Brook. It is expected that these fellowships will enhance the professional development of these fellows and will also increase the diversity of faculty instructors that our undergraduates encounter. Turner Postdoctoral Faculty Trainee’s are expected to have a faculty mentor for their post doctoral research program (preferably NOT their Ph.D advisor) and a faculty mentor for their teaching. These individuals should be identified in the nomination. Eligibility Traineeships will be offered to individuals who are citizens or permanent residents of the United States. We encourage faculty members to nominate students from African American, Hispanic American and Native American backgrounds, as well as others who will contribute to the diversity on our campus. Nominees should have earned a doctorate from Stony Brook no earlier than January, 2006, and no later than August, 2007. Conditions Traineeships will normally be held for a period of two years. The appointments will begin August, 2007. Trainees may not hold another appointment concurrently. Trainees are expected to devote full time effort to the teaching and research program for which the traineeship has been awarded. Nominations Nominations may be made by Graduate Program Director or Department Chair. Nomination packets should include: a nomination letter from the Chair or the Graduate Program Director a statement from the Department Chair outlining a teaching plan for the fellow and the arrangements for faculty mentoring on the fellows teaching a statement from the Ph.D. advisor or proposed post doctoral research advisor, citing the reasons for nominating the candidate to include: proposed research plan and an outline of how the candidate’s career development would benefit from the Turner Post Doctoral Faculty Traineeships a resume that includes: teaching experience, honors/awards/fellowships, employment history, working bibliography, and annotated bibliography two additional letters of recommendation a Turner Fellowship statement that consists of a one-page personal statement from the candidate stating the ways in which the candidate believes s/he will contribute to the diversity on campus, their long term goals and how the traineeship will help them realize those goals. It would be helpful to include any information related to their academic/social experience that relates to the mission of Turner Funding Trainees will receive an annual stipend of $35,000.
